Unanimous Endorsement Follows Wide-Ranging Search

New York, NY – June 23, 2023 – The National Eating Disorders Association announced today the appointment of Dr. Doreen Marshall as the organization’s next chief executive officer.

Dr. Marshall will assume her responsibilities on July 10, 2023.

“After a comprehensive national search process, the board is pleased to have identified such an outstanding individual to assume the leadership of NEDA,” said Geoff Craddock, chairman of the NEDA board of trustees.  “Dr. Marshall’s thoughtful, strategic leadership presence, strong advocacy for and clinical experience with individuals and families, and her track record of building and strengthening partnerships are strengths which will serve NEDA well in continuing its growth and reach.  These critical leadership competencies set her apart from a deep pool of highly qualified candidates.  We are delighted she has accepted the position and look forward to working with her.”

The selection of Dr. Marshall caps a search process facilitated by Egon Zehnder, a global executive search firm whose practice includes placing executives at the nation’s largest and most prestigious non-profit organizations. A large initial prospect pool was narrowed by stages to a group who interviewed with the board’s executive committee and select leaders from the clinical and research communities, and then, to a final round who met with the entire board, which was unanimous in its support for Dr. Marshall.

“I’m honored, and I’m grateful to the board for the opportunity to lead this exceptional organization, ” said Dr. Marshall. “We support individuals and families affected by eating disorders, and serve as a catalyst for prevention, cures and access to quality care. Our work, our service impacts millions of people every year.  I’m delighted to serve as NEDA’s next leader. Along with a talented team of professional team members and an engaged and dynamic board, I look forward to working with and strengthening relationships with the individuals and families we serve, our dynamic volunteers in the program and walk communities, members of the clinical and research communities, colleagues at other organizations, including professionals at treatment centers and those in private practice, our sustaining financial supporters, and members of the media who are passionate about educating and creating greater awareness about eating disorders and mental health.”

Dr. Doreen Marshall is an accomplished psychologist who has dedicated her career to helping people address mental health conditions through treatment, support, and education.

After receiving her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the College of New Jersey, she went on to earn her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Georgia State University. Her extensive clinical experience spans community mental health, college counseling, outpatient, and private practice settings.

Dr. Marshall’s clinical work has focused primarily on the treatment of suicide and suicide bereavement, depression, anxiety, and trauma. She has a keen interest in the intersection of co-existing mental health conditions, including suicidal ideation and behaviors, trauma and eating disorders.

In this role, she led several national partnership initiatives and served as a clinical expert on national mental health communications campaigns. She is a strong advocate for those with lived experience and works tirelessly to increase awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.
