“Neon Light” Song Honors National Eating Disorders Awareness Week
Hello, my NEDA friends! My name is Jada Michael and I’m a 19-year-old singer/songwriter from Miami, Florida. I am honored to be able to participate in National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAwareness) and be a part of an amazing organization that is changing lives and addressing weight stigma, a toxic influence that perpetuates eating disorders and lowers self-esteem.
I wanted to be a part of NEDAwareness Week because I believe that the power of learning to discard toxic cultural influences and instead direct your precious energy toward loving yourself is the most positive, meaningful, and monumental choice you can make.
It is critically important to recognize that if we allow ourselves to be exposed to and absorb unrealistic images and societal pressures that deny us our true beauty we cannot really claim our worth! I wrote “Neon” especially for NEDAwareness Week, from the perspective that I was writing a love letter to a friend who has deeply struggled with self-love and self-acceptance, but she is now finding herself. My friend does not yet fully grasp it, but she is gradually learning that her beauty is radiant and phenomenal; she is like a Neon Light:
In her eyes
There are butterflies
She feels it inside
But can’t yet recognize
The room lights up when she smiles
Inside, her neon light is starting to shine

I want to send my love to anyone struggling with body image struggles. Whatever your sex, size, or color, your pain is your pain and weight stigma is toxic. My wish for you is that you realize your Neon Light within.
Jada Michael is a singer songwriter well known for her soulful, R&B flow. Jada Michael has written numerous original pieces and co-written multiple songs with several Multi-Grammy Award Winning producers including LaShawn Daniels, Novel, and Bart Schundel, all whom have worked with greats such as Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey, among others. Jada Michael received many awards throughout high-school for her musicianship and talent and is recognized as a performer for her captivating, sweet sound and catchy lyrics. Jada is a Vocal Jazz Major at the New School in New York City; she is passionate about helping others embrace their authentic self, and is delighted to participate in NEDAwareness Week.
