This roundtable discussion series is a collaboration between NEDA and the Yoga and Body Image Coalition

NEDA and the Yoga and Body Image Coalition are excited to announce the second roundtable in our collaborative roundtable series, Growing & Thriving Together: A Roundtable Series on Diversity, Inclusivity & Accessibility in Yoga and Fitness Spaces. While the roundtables are open for anyone to view, this series is especially geared toward yoga and fitness instructors.  

The remaining roundtables will be held on the following dates: 

  • October 29, 2019 at 3:00-4:00 pm EST 
  • November 4, 2019 at 3:00-4:00 pm EST
  • December 2, 2019 at 3:00-4:00 pm EST

Our October 29th roundtable will address the importance of inclusive and diverse marketing in yoga and fitness spaces. The roundtable will be moderated by Kerry O’Grady, and panelists will be Lindley Ashline, Pia Guerrero, Pia Schiavo-Campo, and Dr. Sabrina Strings. Kerry O’Grady is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU School of Professional Studies – Division of Programs in Business. Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at a number of institutions since 2008 – and beginning at NYUSPS in 2011 – she teaches in the M.S. in Public Relations and Corporate Communication, and has previously taught in the M.S. in Integrated Marketing program, Continuing Education, and the High School Academy.  An award-winning integrated marketing and advertising professional, past professional positions include Associate Director, Integrated Marketing for Women’s Health magazine, Senior Manager, Integrated Marketing at Parents, FamilyFun, and American Baby magazines (Meredith Corp.), Business Development Manager, La Voz and TV y Mas, and Advertising Executive, The Arizona Republic (Gannett, Inc.). She is a regularly sought-after media expert, as seen in The Washington Post, The New York Post, The Telegraph, and on ABC News’ digital podcast “Uncomfortable,” to name a few. She also is a regular consultant and freelance trainer, currently working at major agencies and corporations across NYC. A passionate fitness enthusiast, she is also the creator and writer for the fitness blog KerryLeeintheCity. She holds a B.A. (summa cum laude) in Journalism and English from UMass-Amherst and an M.S. Public Relations & Corporate Communication from NYUSPS. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Vanderbilt University, studying Leadership and Learning in Organizations.   

 

Lindley Ashline is a professional photographer based in Seattle, WA. She creates artwork that celebrates the unique beauty of bodies that fall outside conventional “beauty” standards at Body Liberation Photography. Lindley is also the creator of Representation Matters, a diverse stock image website, and the Body Love Box, a monthly body-acceptance subscription box. Lindley’s work has been featured on the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) and National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) blogs as well as Allgo, Femtastic, 100 Stories Worth Telling, and the Food Psych and Fat Face Feelings podcasts. 

 

Pía Guerrero has been bending her body in yoga poses since childhood, eventually becoming a teacher (200 YRT). As a certified coach and mentor she guides folks towards personal and professional transformation. Before Smart phones, Facebook and Twitter, Pía launched Adios Barbie the web’s first intersectional feminist magazine. Her work there has been featured in a number of outlets including MSN, CNN/HLN,and the New York Times. Her writing on yoga, media literacy, and body image has appeared in newspapers and magazines, in addition to the books Body Outlaws and Yoga Rising. She has provided administrative leadership for numerous community-based organizations led by community artists and activists working on art initiatives, along with effective social justice and policy reform campaigns. She is close to finishing her Master of Social Work, and can’t wait to begin providing community mental health care in the future.

 

Pia Schiavo-Campo is a fat writer, style expert, public speaker, and a certified transformational coach. You might be familiar with her by way of the Internet, public speaking or from features in Good Morning America, People magazine, and Yoga International Magazine. She made waves through the web with Chronicles of a Mixed Fat Chick, a blog that questions conventional notions of beauty and empowers women to take up as much space as they damn well please. Pia believes that when women work together, they can heal and lead the world. While writing articles about body image, she has also spent the last nine years working in social justice nonprofits at both the direct service level and policy level. She is currently a partner, and brand strategist with the social impact firm, Momentum Solutions Team. Pia is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She speaks Italian fluently and lives in South Los Angeles with her awesome husband, Will, and adorable son, Paolo.

 

Sabrina Strings, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine. She was a recipient of the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship with a joint appointment in the School of Public Health and Department of Sociology. A certified yoga teacher, her work on yoga has been featured in The Feminist Wire, Yoga International, and LA Yoga. Sabrina is also an award winning author with publications in diverse venues including, Ethnic and Racial Studies; Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight, and Society and Feminist Media Studies. Her new book, Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia (NYU Press 2019), was named one of Essence magazine’s “10 Books We’re Dying To Toss Into Our Summer Totes.” It also made “must read” lists in Ms. Magazine, Colorlines, and Bitchmedia, and has been featured on NPR, KPFA and WNYC.
